Feminista

Hi everyone! I used to be a former Goodreads lover. Who has decided to move to BookLikes due to the recent changes to the GR site: that is, the decision of the management to delete reviews that talk about bad author behaviour.

It is important that we know of bad author behaviour and actions. We buy their books. I want to know whether Author A has decided to harass Reviewer A or encouraged fans to stalk Reviewer B.

I want to know this, the same way I wanted to know that a well known sporting good company had been using child labour in the production of some of its products. The same way the WHOLE WORLD wanted to know.

It is irrelevant that the author writes well, or that the said sporting good company produces good quality sporting goods. Our ethics and morals MATTER!

Now to discuss my reading habits:

I am very picky when it comes to books. I am a feminist and I think that shows in my reading list.

There are many things that bug me to death. But I'll always make an exception if the boy-girl standard is reversed. Dear world, that is MY double standard. I respect and champion authors who have the guts to do something different.

Firstly, I hate infidelity in novels.

Secondly, I hate it when the heroine is a virgin and the guy is an expert and skilled lover. I hate it when the heroine, for fated reasons, saves herself for someone who has been sowing his oats. It's not only overdone, old-fashioned and pathetic, but it also grosses me out like he is violating something so sacrosanct.

Thirdly, I might enjoy the occasional alpha-hero tendencies, but my true love lies with beta-heroes. Guys who are loving and sweet. Who don't feel the need to push around their women to make themselves feel more manly.

Twisted (Dark Protectors, #5.5) - Rebecca Zanetti Rating: 4 out of 5.A lovely and sweet novella about a pair of wolf shifters, Maggie, the heroine who has lost her memory and Terrent the Alpha hero, who is determined to be a part of her life again. This novella has intrigued me enough to want to read the other books in this series.ARC Courtesy of NetGalley and Kensington Books.
Shadowland - Karen Chance Awesome!I am glad that I finally got to read from Pritkin's point of view. XD
Pride and Pleasure - Sylvia Day DNFI think up to date, this is my second DNF-ed ARC.I tried my best to keep on reading it, but the characters were banal. The heroine is a very cool and composed virgin, the only one who gets her ruffled is the hero. The hero is a bad boy rake...And the rest is history...I recommend it to people who are in love with rakes and virgin historical romances. I urge you to give this book a try.ARC Courtesy of NetGalley and Penguin Books Australia.
Fall Girl - Toni Jordan Rating: 4 out of 5.This novel was refreshing and original.Set in Australia, Della is a con artist. Her whole family are con artists: including extended family members. So you can imagine how her view of the world is a bit skewed, to say the least.Enter Daniel Metcalf, her next con job.Except, there is something not quite right.Because as a con artist, Della can read her victims pretty well. But she isn't getting a good read on Daniel. While I didn't enjoy the ending much, it was original.
Bride of the Wind - Heather Graham Rating: 1 out of 5.This book had so much potential. But alas, it didn't meet my expectations.Made worse by the fact that Pierce cheated on her...

Gwynneth Ever After

Gwynneth Ever After - Linda Poitevin Rating: 3.5 out of 5.Gwynneth the single parent of three children finds herself in close quarters with a movie star.A bit star-struck, she plans to treat him normally.Gareth is a bit intrigued by this woman. Older and more mature than other women he has dated (although younger than him by seven years), he takes her out to coffee. It was a lovely romance novel. A persistent hero and a heroine who has been burned too badly before. What I loved about these characters was that they were mature. It was a nice change from the banality of overly-love-struck main characters.ARC Courtesy of NetGalley and Michem Publishing.

Mutual Release (Stewart Realty)

Mutual Release - Liz Crowe Rating: 1 out of 5.I did not enjoy this novel. This novel hit several of my pet peeves in the worst way possible. The story mostly consisted of the characters’ sexual history, which was very stereotypical. As in the hero was obviously very free with his body, went to clubs, did BDSM and slept with just about a different woman (if not more) every night that he went to those clubs. Whereas the heroine has never been pleasured properly and has been abused.Of course, the story basically goes on to show how such a promiscuous man like Evan can help a woman like Julie with her life. He introduces the inexperienced her - inexperienced with regards to kink - to the BDSM life. They fall in love…I do have to say, that the secondary plot line about Evan’s sister Olivia made for a slightly different story, but regardless, such stereotypical features of the characters’ sex life is a huge pet peeve of mine and as such, I just couldn’t enjoy the novel.Give this novel a try if you don’t mind the characteristics of the main characters.ARC Courtesy of NetGalley and TriDestiny Publishing.
Parasite - Mira Grant Rating: 5 out of 5.Review to come closer to the release date.ARC Courtesy of NetGalley and Orbit Books/Hachette Book Group.
Pursuit - Caitlyn Nicholas Rating: 4 out of 5.I was going through my Kindle app wondering which book to read next, when I accidentally pressed this book.So I thought, why not? I'll go ahead and read this one. From the first couple of chapters I WAS HOOKED.Dimity Pond is a genius. An Australian born hacker in the U.K., she is on the run from the authorities. Framed for the collapse of Easy Bank and causing widespread panic, she has the status of a cyber terrorist. We start the story, as Dimity's "fake" life starts to fall apart. Her husband, she finds out is a bigamist. If that isn't enough, we find out that the Nemesis, her framer, is still after her and has been sending her threatening emails and phone calls.Caught in a web to destroy the Bunker (a disaster recovery centre), she finds herself in Pursuit from Lord Richard Summerhayes, the owner of the bunker, and a man who was always very aware of Dimity's presence and true name. This book had brilliant three-dimensional characters. The protagonist herself was a complex character. Being framed for such a thing has caused her emotional and mental problems. Distrust and fear are her constant companion throughout the book. Richard Summerhayes is a wonderful hero. The author takes her time developing their relationship. I like that it wasn't instantaneous love-at-first-sight. It made the novel so much more realistic and relate-able. There was one thing, however, that I didn't like very much. I didn't like how Dimity was able to be friends with Kitty after what she had done. I didn't think it was realistic. It is one thing to be able to move on from a guy once you realise that he is a jerk and that you never loved him in the first place. But it is a completely different thing to forgive people like or to even act like nothing ever happened after the first outbreak. Why didn't we get to see Dimity laying it into Kitty properly? Yes, there is a disaster ahead and there isn't any time for personal fights. But afterwards? It was like it was completely forgiven if not forgotten. It was reiterated that Kitty is Dimity's friend. But the fact is, FRIEND'S DON'T DO THAT TO ONE ANOTHER. It is a BIG no no. If friends can't mind that rule, than there is little difference between friends and enemies. Hell I wouldn't even be able betray someone I hated, to that extent. And don't even get me started on Jake. Firstly, I was glad that we got to see so little of him and Kitty. But regardless, I hated the whole he-is-a-changed-man scenario. It was like just because bad things happened to him, it is easier to forgive and forget his intentional and continuing sins? Well that sure doesn't change the past...ARC Courtesy of NetGalley and Momentum Books.
Blade Song - J.C. Daniels Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
Redeeming Love - Francine Rivers Rating: 5 out of 5.Re-read: ARC Copy received I am still speechless...Review to come...
And One Rode West - Heather Graham Rating: 5 out of 5.This novel was AH-MAZING. And I knew it was going to be. This was why I left it till the end, because I wanted a brilliant finish to my ARC reading of Heather Graham. This is the story of Christa Cameron and Jeremy McCauley.Like the 2 other couples previous to them, these two are from two sides of the war. Except the war has ended and people are uniting to rebuild the nation.A little insulated from this rebuilding attempt, Christa is still putting her heart and soul into the Cameron house. In a desperate bid to save the this very house from third parties, Christa marries Jeremy. This couple, from book two, were explosive. So I knew just how explosive this book was going to be.I always thought Jeremy was half in love with Christa from the last book. So it wasn't a big surprise to me that he was determined to make their marriage a real one and took Christa West with him. I do warn you though, this isn't a sweet romance. It was loving, yes, especially in the second half of the book but there was little sweetness to it. There was constant tension between the two and the terrains they brave in the West brought it's own nightmares and fears. ARC Courtesy of NetGalley and Random House Publishing.
One Wore Blue - Heather Graham Rating: 2.5 out of 5.One Wore BlueI finally got around to reading Kiernan and Jesse’s story. Kiernan disappointed me so very much in this book. She is anti-slavery, but still deathly loyal to the Confederates. Her reasoning, what I gathered was that, Yankees have no right to take away their choice. Which sounds reasonable, except when the choice in question involves taking another person’s choice away. What I mean to say is that, she thinks the Southern states should be given a choice to stop slavery. But what about the rights of people who are enslaved? Where is their choice? She also argues that they will eventually stop it. Well eventually isn’t good enough. Injustice was happening then and there, it shouldn’t have been happening anyway. It should have been stopped the day it began. I really couldn’t relate to her character. There was a scene where a “master” beat his slave, and even after seeing the injustice of that, she still sides with the idea of giving them a choice.Although nothing much of my knowledge on that war has changed since when I read the second book, I found it impossible to excuse such reasoning even though there were holes in my knowledge. Another thing I didn’t like about Kiernan was how she strung along Anthony. She says that she doesn’t want to hurt him, that he didn’t get her subtle hints. But he waits for her for years. She is worried that she will hurt him, what about when he finds out that she loves someone else after the years he has waited. I just found that really selfish. It was as though she kept on putting off telling him because she wanted to have her options open, or she herself for her own reasons didn’t want to have an awkward conversation with him. And what she does with those sick Yankees resting in her home was just despicable… It wasn't good enough that she is against the idea of slavery but that she is allowing others the option to pursue slavery,I wished that Callie in the second book had more of Kiernan’s anger and stubbornness. ARC Courtesy of NetGalley and Random House Publishing.
Flirting with Disaster (Camelot, #3) - Ruthie Knox Rating: 3.5 out of 5.I compare every Ruthie Know book with her "About Last Night" novel. It blew my mind, it was amazing.Consequently, while I liked this novel, it didn't hit the same amount of amazing that ALN did.Sean Owens, CEO of a successful company, finds himself stuttering when he sees the girl he was in love with in high school. Katie Clark, just out of a marriage, does not understand why Sean is ignoring her and refusing to talk to her.Sean was a sweet hero. I loved his stuttering and I loved the fact that the author did not shy away from it.There was a bit of suspense in the novel, with regards to a musician called Judah and the threats he has been receiving.Overall, it was a satisfying read.ARC Courtesy of Random House Publishing Group and NetGalley.
Hopeless - Colleen Hoover Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
Queen of Swords - Katee Robert Rating: 3 out of 5.It started out great, but I found the heroine a bit too prickly for my liking. I also wished the ending was longer and more complete in its conclusion.
